Panic broke out at the Ipata Market in Ilorin on Thursday after residents apprehended a woman suspected of attempting to kidnap a child.
The suspect, identified as Khadijah from Ile Lase, Oke-Apomu, was stopped around 10:25 a.m. by members of the community who reportedly became suspicious of her movements.
Eyewitnesses said four ATM cards were found in her possession during the encounter, while angry youths at the scene smashed her mobile phone.
The incident attracted a large crowd, with residents demanding that she be handed over to security agencies. Operatives later arrived at the market to restore calm and disperse onlookers.
As of press time, it was unclear whether Khadijah acted alone or was working with accomplices. Security agencies are expected to launch further investigations into the case.
Community leaders have since appealed for calm, urging residents to remain vigilant while avoiding mob action.
