United Kingdom Commends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms, Lauds First Lady’s Empowerment Initiatives

Abuja, August 18, 2025 – The United Kingdom has applauded Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing them as bold and necessary steps that are already creating new opportunities for growth and trade.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, made the commendation on Monday during a courtesy visit to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the State House, Abuja.

Montgomery noted that despite the challenges, the reforms were strengthening Nigeria’s economy and enhancing bilateral trade relations with the UK. He also praised the work of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), a pet project of the First Lady, for its targeted empowerment of women, particularly in education, healthcare, and humanitarian services.

“We see a lot of positivity in Nigeria’s economy. The reforms are difficult but necessary, and they are creating new opportunities. We are also impressed by the track record of RHI as a vehicle for empowering women in key areas,” the envoy stated.

He further expressed the UK government’s interest in Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional review process, especially the proposal for special seats for women in the National Assembly, which he said would strengthen representation.

In her remarks, the First Lady assured the delegation of the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerians through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“I believe we can help each other if we really show concern,” Senator Tinubu said. “RHI focuses on women empowerment in the informal sector, and these are the ones whose lives we are directly touching.”

She also acknowledged concerns about the dwindling number of women in parliament and pledged to support ongoing efforts to increase women’s political participation.

“We have to ensure that the right people represent us—those who can truly do the work. That is why we must enlighten our women,” she added.

The British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, was part of the visiting team.
