One Dead, Two Injured in Egbe Bridge Crash as LASTMA Rescues Survivors
A fatal road accident on Egbe Bridge, inward Ikotun, Lagos, on Tuesday morning claimed the life of a commercial tricycle operator and left two passengers with severe injuries.
The crash, involving a Toyota Venza (GWA 659 RD) and a commercial tricycle, popularly known as “Marwa” (EPE 245 QM), occurred when the Venza driver, approaching from the Ejigbo axis, allegedly attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre atop the bridge. The vehicle veered into the path of the oncoming tricycle from Ikotun, leading to a violent collision.
The tricycle rider died on the spot, while a male and female passenger sustained multiple fractures. Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived swiftly, rescuing the injured from the wreckage before handing them over to police officers from Ikotun Division, who took them to General Hospital, Isolo, for urgent treatment.
The driver of the Toyota Venza reportedly fled the scene. Police have launched a manhunt to arrest him.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery. He urged motorists to avoid overtaking on bridges and elevated roads, where visibility is reduced, warning that impatience and traffic law violations can lead to avoidable tragedies.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of reckless driving,” Bakare-Oki said. “We must all drive with discipline, patience, and full regard for safety rules.”
