Senate President Godswill Akpabio has applauded Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for clinching their seventh FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title, describing them as trailblazers for Nigerian women in sports.
In a statement issued by his media adviser, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio said the team’s triumph in the 2025 edition of the tournament is a clear testament to the resilience, talent, and leadership potential of Nigerian women.
“It is heartwarming that in the span of two weeks, Nigerian women have conquered Africa twice — first through the Super Falcons and now D’Tigress,” he noted. “Their determination and discipline reflect the Nigerian spirit of excellence, regardless of the odds.”
D’Tigress made history by defeating Senegal in the semi-final and overpowering Mali in the final to secure a fifth consecutive and seventh overall AfroBasket title.
Akpabio linked the victory to the spirit of the “Renewed Hope Agenda” championed by President Bola Tinubu, saying the win was a source of national pride and a strong message of inspiration to young Nigerian girls.
He also commended the team’s coaching staff for their leadership and commitment, stating that their collective efforts had once again elevated Nigeria on the continental sports stage.
