The incident, which unfolded on the morning of September 2, has raised questions about potential safety violations and the growing tensions between the state government and the military.
According to sources from Lalbazar, the truck was allegedly being driven recklessly at high speed. The vehicle was reportedly tailing Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma’s car, which was positioned directly behind the army truck. Authorities at Lalbazar, the police headquarters, asserted that the truck violated traffic laws, prompting the traffic police to intervene and halt the vehicle.
As the incident escalated, the truck was detained in front of the Writers’ Building, a historic landmark in Kolkata that houses the West Bengal state government offices. By the time this report was published, the truck remained parked at the scene. Police have confirmed that the vehicle made a hazardous right turn, which they claimed could have led to a serious accident.
Officials from Lalbazar emphasized that the truck’s erratic movement posed a significant risk. They revealed that an investigation is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of action regarding the violation of traffic laws. The authorities are also assessing the potential consequences for the Army personnel involved in the incident.
However, a member of the Army crew aboard the truck disputed the allegations, denying that the vehicle was being driven recklessly. The Army personnel explained that the truck made a right turn because the traffic signal was green. Additionally, the Army personnel claimed they were unaware that Kolkata’s Police Commissioner’s car was following them.
The matter has been escalated to Fort William, the headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, where senior military officials have been briefed on the incident. Meanwhile, police sources indicated that the truck would be taken to the Hare Street Police Station for further investigation.
The timing of this incident adds to the ongoing political drama between the West Bengal state government and the Indian Army. The previous day, on Monday, the Army had dismantled a protest stage erected by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) at the Gandhi Statue in Dharamtala. Upon learning of the stage’s removal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee quickly arrived at the location to protest, though she refrained from directly attacking the Army.
While Mamata did not criticize the military, she indirectly pointed fingers at the central government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In her statement, she emphasized her respect for the Indian Army, declaring, “I have no ill-will towards my Army. We are proud of them.” However, she expressed concern over the Army’s actions, stating that when the Army acts on instructions from the BJP, it raises questions about the direction the country is headed.
