Authorities in Iran have executed a man convicted of killing a woman and her three children during a robbery in the southern province of Fars.
According to Iranian state media reports on Tuesday, the execution was carried out publicly near the scene of the crime. The man had allegedly carried out the attack with his wife, who has also been sentenced to death. Her execution is expected to take place inside a prison.
The rare public hanging drew attention because of its brutality and location. Human rights groups have repeatedly condemned Iran’s use of the death penalty, arguing that executions are used as a tool to suppress dissent.
United Nations figures show that no fewer than 1,000 people were executed in Iran in 2024, making the country one of the world’s leading users of capital punishment.
