The Kaduna State Government says it is stepping up preparations for the upcoming National Youth Games, determined to deliver a stronger outing than in previous editions.
Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Prof. Benjamin Kumai Gugong, made this known when executives of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kaduna State chapter, paid him a visit in his office.
He stated that the state’s athletes, drawn from various sports associations, are undergoing rigorous training in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, coaches, and technical officials.
“By the grace of God, our preparation this time will surpass what we had in Delta. The governor has been providing all the support we require, and we are confident of enjoying even greater backing this year. Different associations have begun selecting athletes to represent us, and we are working closely together to ensure we present the best,” Gugong said.
The commissioner disclosed that Kaduna State will compete in at least 20 sports, with about 300 athletes and officials set to participate.
On the zonal eliminations, Gugong expressed optimism about maintaining Kaduna’s lead.
“Over the years, we have consistently excelled at the zonal elimination stage, and I am confident we will perform even better this time,” he said.
He noted that although renovation works are ongoing at the state’s main stadium, other venues such as Murtala Mohammed Square, Ranchers Bees Stadium, Ahmadu Bello Stadium, and the Kaduna State University sports grounds remain available for hosting events.
The National Youth Games, designed to discover and nurture young sporting talents across the country, is expected to feature athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in this year’s edition.
