U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the swift removal of homeless people from Washington D.C., saying the nation’s capital must be made “safer and more beautiful than it ever was before.”
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump shared images of tents and litter along city streets, declaring, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals… we’re going to put you in jail where you belong.”
The president also referenced a press conference scheduled for Monday on crime and cleanliness in the capital. Washington D.C., though governed by a local mayor and council, remains under significant federal oversight — a dynamic that has often seen Trump clash with the city’s Democratic mayor, Muriel Bowser.
U.S. media reports suggest the federal government is considering deploying hundreds of National Guard members to carry out the president’s directive, though no final decision has been made. Trump did not provide specific details on how the removal would be implemented, but two weeks earlier, he had pledged action against homeless encampments near the White House.
