Al Jazeera has condemned the killing of five of its staff in Gaza, accusing the Israeli army of deliberately targeting journalists in what it called a “premeditated assault on press freedom.”
In a statement on Monday, the network described the attack as part of the “catastrophic consequences” of Israel’s ongoing military campaign, which it said has resulted in mass civilian deaths, forced starvation, and the destruction of entire communities. It alleged that the attack on its correspondents was aimed at silencing coverage of the situation in Gaza and the “impending seizure and occupation” of the territory.
According to Al Jazeera, the five journalists were killed on Sunday when Israeli forces struck their tent outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The Israel Defense Forces claimed that one of those killed was affiliated with Hamas.
The network urged the international community and global organisations to take urgent action to stop what it described as an “ongoing genocide” and to end the deliberate targeting of members of the press.
