Panic broke out on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State, when a suspected internet fraudster drove a Mercedes Benz saloon car into a section of the New Benin Market, leaving three traders injured.
The car, bearing registration number LAGOS LND 192 JZ, reportedly lost control while heading from the Sokponba Road axis. It veered onto Second East Circular Road and crashed into roadside stalls where traders were actively engaged in business.
Eyewitnesses described the incident as terrifying, with many vendors and shoppers narrowly escaping harm. One of the injured traders, Sandra Osaro, said the consequences would have been far more severe had the crash occurred on a market day, when the area is typically crowded with people.
“This market is known for fairly used clothes and shoes. On Tuesdays and Fridays, buyers and sellers pack both sides of the road,” she said.
Another trader, Mama Ivie, who had just returned from a church thanksgiving service, shared how she avoided the crash by mere seconds.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Moses Yamu. He stated that the driver has been arrested and is currently in police custody.
“No fatalities were recorded. Three individuals sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention. The driver remains in detention,” Yamu said.
