The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, while withholding the results of 192,089 students over various cases of examination malpractice.
Announcing the release on Monday in Lagos, the Head of the Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, said the withheld results represent 9.75 percent of the total candidates and are under investigation. He noted a slight improvement compared to the previous year’s 11.92 percent, but expressed deep concern over the persistent use of mobile phones and rising cases of organised cheating in schools.
“The council maintains a zero-tolerance policy for examination malpractice,” Dangut said, warning that both students and schools involved in such practices are damaging the country’s education system. He added that decisions on the withheld results will be made by WAEC’s appropriate committee, and affected candidates will be notified through their schools.
Out of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the examination, 1,517,517 (77.06%) had their results fully processed and released, while 451,796 (22.94%) have some subjects still being reviewed. WAEC assured that efforts are underway to complete processing for affected students in the coming days.
In terms of performance, 1,718,090 candidates (87.24%) secured credit and above in at least five subjects, while 754,545 candidates (38.32%) earned credits in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This figure, however, marks a 33.8 percent drop compared to 2024.
The examination also recorded significant participation by special needs candidates, with 12,178 registered across various categories including visually impaired, hearing impaired, and physically challenged students all of whom were adequately accommodated.
WAEC further disclosed that candidates can access their results online within 12 hours of the announcement, provided they have cleared all financial obligations. For those fully processed, digital certificates will be available within 48 hours, while hard copies will be ready within 90 days. However, candidates sponsored by state governments with outstanding debts will be unable to view their results until payments are made.
