Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has dismissed mounting criticism over perceived bias in his squad selection for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), maintaining that only players suited to his tactical system were invited.
The backlash followed the release of a 23-man squad composed entirely of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) players, including a significant number from Remo Stars, whose head coach also serves as Chelle’s assistant on the national team.
Addressing reporters ahead of the CHAN tournament, which kicks off this weekend across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Chelle explained that his choices were dictated strictly by the demands of his tactical approach, built around high pressing and ball possession.
“My only thinking is I have a philosophy,” Chelle said. “I want to keep the ball, and when we don’t have the ball, I want us to press high. So I need to bring some players who can play in my philosophy.”
Observers have criticised the squad’s heavy Remo Stars presence, accusing Chelle of favouritism. However, the Malian-born coach dismissed the notion, citing examples from other successful African teams.
“If you see Morocco, a lot of players are from Raja or Wydad. In South Africa, their team has eight players from one club. Remo Stars won the league, but for me, it’s about who fits the game plan,” he said.
Chelle firmly rejected any suggestion that his assistant’s role at Remo Stars influenced the selections.
“This is not a question about my assistant being the coach of Remo. No, no, no. I need players who deserve to be here through their game and who fit my philosophy,” he clarified.
The squad, which was finalised after a closed-door camp at the Remo Stars Sports Institute, includes key names such as team captain Junior Harrison Nduka, Sikiru Alimi, and Godwin Obaje.
Chelle also confirmed that certain players, including Papa Daniel Mustapha, were omitted due to eligibility issues following overseas moves.
“We miss Papa Daniel. We miss a lot of players. But this is a new team, and we’ve worked a lot,” he said.
Nigeria will compete in Group D, which features defending champions Senegal, as well as Sudan and Congo. Chelle reiterated that the final list was drawn up based on a clear technical framework, not sentiment or club affiliation.
“There are many good players in the NPFL, but I must select those who can execute my game plan. That’s the reality,” he stated.
