The new teaching positions are intended for newly established Junior High Schools, upgraded High Schools, and Higher Secondary Schools under the jurisdiction of the GTA. The proposal for these posts was submitted by the Principal Secretary of GTA and is currently under active consideration by the state’s School Education Department and the Home and Hill Affairs Department.
According to an official memorandum (GTA-17/12C/2024-EDEDD) issued by the Commissioner of School Education, the proposal is undergoing administrative processing. The Home and Hill Affairs Department has requested detailed data on the proposed teaching positions, specifically seeking clarity on whether these are entirely new posts or include previously sanctioned but vacant positions.
To expedite this, the District Inspectors of Schools in both Darjeeling and Kalimpong have been directed to submit the required data in a prescribed Excel format, ensuring proper classification and prompt processing.
GTA Chief Executive Anit Thapa welcomed the development, calling it a positive outcome of sustained efforts to rejuvenate the region’s educational landscape. “This is the fruitful outcome of our continued efforts to build the hills and revive it as an education hub,” Thapa stated. “The newly created teaching positions will significantly raise academic standards and help address the chronic shortage of teachers in hill schools. This is a happy moment for the people of our region. Our initiatives are gradually beginning to bear fruit.”
The move is widely viewed as a key policy step not only in addressing the educational needs of students in the hills but also in creating much-needed job opportunities for aspiring local educators.
Once the data verification process and administrative procedures are complete, the recruitment process for the new teaching posts is expected to commence. Teachers’ organisations across the GTA region have welcomed the decision, calling it a long-awaited and much-needed boost for both education and employment in the area.
