PTI, July 24, 2025, Bankura/Bardhaman (WB): At least 13 people lost their lives in tragic lightning strike incidents across West Bengal’s Bankura and Purba Bardhaman districts on Thursday, officials confirmed.
In Bankura district, Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Tiwari reported that eight people were killed during thunderstorms in separate locations. Among the fatalities, four occurred in Onda, and one each in Kotulpur, Joypur, Patrasayer, and Indas police station areas.
According to a Disaster Management official, five more deaths were reported in Purba Bardhaman district, where four others were also injured in similar lightning incidents. Two of the deceased were from Madhabdihi, while one fatality each was recorded in Ausgram, Mangalkot, and Raina police station areas. The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment in local hospitals.
In Onda, Bankura, Narayan Sar (48), Jaba Bauri (38), and Tiloka Mal (49) died while working in paddy fields. The identity of the fourth victim in Onda is yet to be confirmed. Other victims in Bankura included Jiaul Haq Molla (50) of Kotulpur, Jiban Ghosh (20) of Patrasayer, Ismail Mondal (60) of Indas, and Uttam Bhuniya (38) of Joypur.
From Purba Bardhaman district, the deceased were identified as Sanatan Patra (60) and Parimal Das (32) of Madhabdihi, Rabin Tudu (25) of Ausgram, Abhijit Santra (25) of Raina, and Buro Maddi (64) of Mangalkot, as per Disaster Management authorities.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and have urged the public to take precautions during adverse weather conditions.
