The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to extend its School Protection Unit services to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), as part of renewed efforts to enhance safety in academic environments across Ondo State.
The development came to light during a courtesy visit to the University by the newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Ondo State, CP Adebowale Lawal, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
Welcoming the police delegation, AAUA Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to working closely with security agencies to safeguard students, staff, and the wider community.
“As a responsible university management, we prioritise the security of our students and personnel,” Prof. Ige stated.
“We are ready to provide all necessary support to the police to ensure the campus and Akungba community remain secure. We will go to great lengths to eliminate criminal elements from our environment.”
The Vice Chancellor appealed for increased deployment of police officers to the university and its surrounding areas.
He also urged stronger partnerships among stakeholders, including security agencies and host communities, in maintaining peace and order.
Prof. Ige further acknowledged the efforts of the Divisional Police Officer in Akungba and his team for their consistent support in fostering a safe academic atmosphere, assuring that the university would continue to deepen its collaboration with the police.
In his address, CP Lawal applauded AAUA’s proactive approach to security and disclosed plans by the command to expand its School Protection Unit—which was initially focused on secondary schools—to cover tertiary institutions.
“We are also working to revive the Student-Police Relations Committee. This will serve as a vital platform for open dialogue, sharing of ideas, and peaceful resolution of emerging issues,” the Commissioner said.
He announced that more officers, both in uniform and plain clothes, would be deployed to the university for heightened surveillance. “Our tactical units will be periodically stationed in and around the campus to ensure the safety of lives and property,” he assured.
CP Lawal was accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and other senior officials of the NPF.
