The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in remembrance of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently in London.
This announcement comes as part of the ongoing week-long national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on Monday, following the President’s directive.
Dr Tunji-Ojo said the holiday serves as a national gesture to recognise Buhari’s dedication to Nigeria, his leadership through various phases of the nation’s history, and his efforts toward unity and development.
“President Buhari’s life was marked by commitment to public service, discipline, and integrity,” the minister stated. “This day gives Nigerians the chance to reflect on his impact and honour his memory.”
He urged citizens to dedicate the day to fostering peace and unity, values strongly associated with the late president’s ideals and leadership style.
As part of the mourning period, all national flags are to remain at half-mast through Saturday, July 19.
The government also extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians across the country, expressing hope that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
