Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | Howrah | 29 June 2025: A BJP leader has been arrested from Howrah for allegedly cheating a woman of over ₹1 lakh by falsely promising her a job. The accused, identified as Hariyam Valmiki, was taken into custody by the Amdanga police on Saturday night following a complaint filed earlier this month.
According to police and local sources, Hariyam Valmiki, a resident of the Manikpur area under Sankrail police station limits, came into contact with a fellow BJP leader from Amdanga. The two became acquaintances through party activities, and Hariyam later offered her a job opportunity, claiming he had the necessary connections.
The complainant, a member of the BJP’s State Committee for the Scheduled Caste (SC) Cell, trusted Hariyam due to their shared political affiliation and paid him more than ₹1 lakh for the promised job. However, after repeated delays and no results, she realized she had been misled.
On June 6, she lodged a formal complaint at Amdanga Police Station, alleging fraud and breach of trust. Acting on the complaint, police conducted a raid in Manikpur, Howrah, and arrested Hariyam on Saturday night.
He is expected to be produced before the Barasat court today, where police will seek custody for further interrogation.
The case has raised concerns within the BJP’s local ranks, especially since both the accused and the complainant are associated with the party. Police have not ruled out the possibility of other victims and are continuing their investigation..
