Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has mourned the passing of renowned businessman and philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, describing his death as a monumental loss to Kano State, Nigeria, and the African continent.
Dantata, who died at the age of 94, was hailed by Atiku as a towering figure in African business whose contributions to national economic growth and employment creation were immeasurable.
In a statement issued by his media office in Abuja on Friday, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Kano-born billionaire, saying he was devastated by the loss of such an astute entrepreneur and national icon.
“Aminu Dantata was a successful businessman for decades who inspired a generation of younger Nigerians to venture into enterprise and wealth creation,” the statement read. “It is impossible to discuss Nigeria’s business history without referencing the Dantata family.”
Atiku praised Dantata’s foresight and courage in business, noting that he successfully transformed the family’s trading ventures into modern civil engineering and construction enterprises, thereby creating thousands of jobs across the country.
He also lauded Dantata’s humility and generosity, highlighting his extensive philanthropic activities, which were often carried out without seeking public attention.
“To be enormously wealthy without ostentation is a rare quality,” Atiku said. “Aminu Dantata was a shining example of modesty and quiet service to humanity. His life was a fountain of inspiration to many.”
Describing the late businessman as a “decent and uncontroversial public figure,” Atiku said Dantata played a key role in promoting peace and unity across the country through his words and actions.
The former Vice President called on the Federal Government to immortalise Dantata by renaming a public institution after him in honour of his enduring legacy and contributions to national development.
Alhaji Aminu Dantata was one of Nigeria’s most influential businessmen and a respected elder statesman. He is survived by children and grandchildren.
