In a significant development in the multi-crore West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has obtained fresh audio-visual evidence that could further expose the extent of the alleged conspiracy. Though the agency has refrained from disclosing the exact contents of the recordings, sources close to the investigation revealed that the materials include conversations offering crucial insights into how the scam was orchestrated and directly overseen by former state Education Minister and Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee.According to the sources, the recordings reveal step-by-step details of how different stages of the fraudulent recruitment process were planned and executed. The content reportedly implicates senior WBSSC officials as well as representatives of NYSA, the private agency contracted to manage and preserve Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets used in recruitment examinations.
In response to the newly surfaced evidence, the CBI has approached a special court in Kolkata seeking permission to collect voice samples from five individuals named in the chargesheet. These samples are intended to confirm whether the voices heard in the recordings belong to the suspects. The court has scheduled a hearing on June 12 to decide whether the agency will be allowed to proceed with this step.
Among the five individuals in question, three were previously affiliated with the WBSSC, while the remaining two were associated with NYSA. Investigators believe the new evidence significantly strengthens the case against Partha Chatterjee, who has already been identified by both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as the chief architect of the scam. The recordings are also expected to help establish the operational links between officials within the commission and the private vendor.
On April 30, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose granted prosecution sanction against Partha Chatterjee and Manik Bhattacharya, a Trinamool Congress MLA and former president of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE), in connection with the ED’s ongoing investigation. While Bhattacharya is currently out on bail, Chatterjee remains in judicial custody as investigative agencies continue to unravel the full scope of the scam that has deeply impacted the state’s education recruitment system.
