The Ondo State Police Command has reacted to reports making rounds on various media platforms about an alleged letter from a suspected bandit threatening a fresh attack on the Owo church that suffered a deadly assault in 2022.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police emphasized that the source and authenticity of the letter have not been confirmed.
Nonetheless, the Command said it is treating the matter seriously in the interest of public safety and has already taken precautionary steps.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, who signed the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, said heightened security measures have been introduced across the state.
These include increased deployment of officers to religious centres—particularly churches and mosques—on days of worship, as well as intensified patrol and surveillance operations.
The Command urged residents not to panic, assuring them that their safety remains a top priority.
It also advised media outlets and the general public to avoid spreading unverified claims that may cause unnecessary fear or disrupt the existing peace in the state.
“It is important to avoid the circulation of unconfirmed information or falsehoods that could stir anxiety and reverse the progress made in securing the state,” the Police stated.
Residents were encouraged to go about their daily routines without fear while remaining alert and reporting any suspicious activity.
The Command also provided its emergency contact number and social media handles for citizens who wish to share useful information or request assistance.
