KalimNews, May 3, 2025, Kalimpong : A significant survey aimed at making the alternative highway connecting Kalimpong a reality has been completed today. The survey team, led by Executive Engineer Mr. Nayan Rai and his technical team from the West Bengal State Rural Development Department (WBSRD), has concluded the preliminary survey of the route stretching from Kalimpong market to 27 Mile Bangey Bazar, passing through Kamsi.
This initiative is a response to the long-standing public demand for an alternative highway, which has been voiced since 1986. In recent years, the demand gained momentum thanks to the active involvement of the Dr. B.L. Dixit Road Beneficiary Committee, consisting of approximately 30 organizations. A press release issued by the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha stated This committee has regularly submitted memorandums to Kalimpong’s various public representatives.
Following the submission of a memorandum to the Chief of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, Mr. Anit Thapa, and receiving his positive response and guidance, the survey work was initiated, the release said.
The survey team has carried out an extensive study on the topography, feasibility, and potential challenges of constructing the road from Kamsi to 27 Mile Bangey Bazar. If built, this alternative highway is expected to be a historic achievement for the people of Kalimpong district. The new route is expected to provide a long-term solution to the recurring roadblock issues caused by landslides in NH10 and other factors, particularly during the monsoon season.
Additionally, this new highway is expected to reduce the travel distance between Kalimpong and Siliguri by approximately 7–8 kilometers, saving an estimated 1.5 hours of travel time, the release added.
The survey was attended by several key members of the Dr. B.L. Dixit Road Beneficiary Committee, including President Mr. John Paudel, Secretary Dr. Regmani Katel, and other members. Notable local figures also participated, including Mr. Binay Ghising, President of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajantantrik Morcha (BGPM) Kalimpong District, Mr. Samar Michael Gurung, General Secretary of the 35 Bong Durbin Cluster, representatives of Yuva Shakti, including Mr. Suraj Rai, Mr. Shailesh Pradhan, media cell member Mr. Divash Chhetri, and several local residents.
The organizers have reported that the program concluded positively and with great enthusiasm. With the survey report soon to be prepared by the WBSRD, the process for highway construction is expected to move forward. Local residents believe that the construction of this alternative highway will significantly benefit the development and transportation infrastructure of the Kalimpong region.
