The Imo State Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly spreading false information about an impending herdsmen attack in the Umuoba community of Irete, sparking unnecessary panic among residents.
According to a statement released by the police, operatives apprehended the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Chidi Emma Azonibe, following a meticulous investigation into the origin of the threatening message. The message, which quickly spread through the community, caused alarm and led to a swift security response before it was determined to be false.
Azonibe, a native of Umuelele in Irete, confessed to posting the message but claimed that it was originally composed by a religious leader, identified as Rev. Ijeoma of Assembly Church, Irete. He further stated that he and his brother, Amanea, were instructed by the prophetess to disseminate the message, which falsely suggested an imminent attack by herdsmen.
Authorities have since condemned the circulation of unverified and fear-inducing information, warning that such actions could lead to unnecessary chaos and strain security resources. The police reassured the public of their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state while urging residents to verify information before spreading it.
Azonibe remains in police custody as investigations continue, and he is expected to face charges related to public mischief and incitement. Meanwhile, security operatives have heightened surveillance in the area to prevent any disturbances resulting from the false alarm.
