Security agencies in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have apprehended some suspected criminals involved in the theft of sewage manhole covers along highways in Abuja.
Efforts are ongoing to track down their accomplices, particularly those buying the stolen manhole covers.
The crackdown follows directives from the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who has expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of vandalism.
According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike vowed that the government would spare no effort in ensuring that all perpetrators face the full wrath of the law.
In a statement issued by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the Minister condemned the act, describing it as both “devilish” and a significant threat to public safety.
“It is appalling that some Nigerians can go to the extent of removing sewage manhole covers from highways, putting the lives of road users in grave danger, just to sell them for profit,” Wike said.
He further lamented that while the government invests public funds to provide essential infrastructure for the people, criminal elements undermine these efforts by stealing and selling such amenities, disregarding the dangers posed to innocent citizens.
The Minister also praised the patriotism of the individual who recorded and shared the viral video exposing the theft.
“Such acts of vigilance and civic responsibility are exactly what Nigeria needs to combat these criminal activities,” he stated.
Relevant stakeholders have been mobilized to address the issue comprehensively, with updates expected in the coming days.
For now, authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to help safeguard public infrastructure in the FCT.
